ABSTRACT

The study gathered the comprehensive baseline data of anthrax incidences from 1999 to 2015 of the 3 provinces and developed a disease map to enhance the Anthrax disease monitoring and surveillance in Region 02.

Retrospective data revealed that 210 cases of Anthrax occurred in livestock in the provinces of Isabela, Cagayan and Quirino. Mortality among infected animals in 100%. Carabaos were the primary affected livestock (94.76%), followed by swine (4.28%), horses (0.95%) and cattle (0.47%). The incidence were on months of January, February and June to December based on the data gathered and believed to have been participated by environmental  factors such as temperature, weather patterns and topographical location. The organism may have been acquired through ingestion of soil and water from contaminated areas.

There were 150 recorded human cases from Isabela and Cagayan. The highest incidence reported was from Lasam, Cagayan with total of 54 cases (44.26%) recorded in 2010. Risk factors include vaccination, animal trading, management and environment.

The map can generate the population and areas at risk, possible factors enhancing the spread occurrence of the disease and its seasonal occurrence as basis for the most effective prevention and control protocol against Anthrax in animals.
