“This is an impressive accomplishment of the Barangay and Local Officials as far as organic gardening is concerned. It is very commendable,” Regional Executive Director Narciso A. Edillo said during the launching program of the Agro-Eco Tourism Park and Organic Learning site at Barangay Cansan, Cabagan, Isabela on January 31, 2019.
“Through the encouragement of Mayor Christopher Mamauag, we ventured into this project,” Ms. Grace Beltran, Municipal Agriculturist said.
“We have been listening to the tips RED Edillo shared via the live streaming of DZDA (formerly DWDA) 105.3 FM. We started off with this project using those tips,” Barangay Captain Marivic Malabug explained.
“It is a matter of political will,” Mayor Mamauag said. “We really support organic agriculture.”
RED Edillo suggested that an ordinance should be passed so that other barangays can emulate the communal organic gardening.
He said that the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office 2 (DA RFO 2) will assist by distributing vegetable seeds and conduct of training if needed.
“This is worth emulating, ”he said. “If all barangays can have such, we can easily achieve DA’s mandate of food sufficiency, poverty alleviation, and food security.”
The barangay and municipal officials planted squash, eggplants, onions, radish, lettuce, and okra in the learning site. These are organically grown in elevated garden supported by bamboos.
